NOTE: Mike Danata is a member here and posted his review here after listening to Susan's CD. But since then he also included it in a comment to M DeROGATIS - music critic for the Chicago Sun-Times, along with his thoughts of that review. I think he's earned his own thread here!
Dear Mr Derogatis this is my second post, having REREAD your REVIEW, at the top of the page.
May I repectfully point out that MOST of the so called "Hype" that currently surrounds Susan Boyle, has actually been caused by US the PUBLIC!
WE watched her Millions of times on YOUTUBE through just ONE TV performance that was put up (no matter how CONTRIVED it might have seemed to people like yourself) whenever we were feeling low, we went back to view it again, it made us FEEL GOOD! we emailed it to everyone we thought might have missed it to make them feel good as well! when you see something truly Inspiring & MAGICAL you want to share it with the world! & that's what the world did................
WE, THE PUBLIC created MASSIVE RECORD BREAKING SALES of the album, because WE wanted to hear Susan sing! & many of us have ordered/purchased MULTIPLE copy's of her CD!!! (Just to ensure the album's success!!!) WE are not MAD (although I did wonder if I was at first!), it turns out that MILLIONS of others have done the same!!! Susan is a PHENOMENON!!! I have NEVER in my LIFE joined a FAN CLUB EVER, but I am now a member of most of the SUSAN BOYLE FAN CLUBS! I haven't bought a CD in YEARS but purchased THREE of Susan's. What ON EARTH is going on?
Susan is being featured here there & everywhere because of the HYPE that the PUBLIC have created. The papers (& indeed YOURSELF!) are now cashing in on it!!!
Susan REALLY is "The People's Singer" because she was drawn to OUR attention & we ADOPTED HER!
People who "Get It" with Susan will get very upset with people who "Bash Her" because you are also "Bashing" US the MILLIONS of people who support her! We all feel extremely protective towards her.
Only yesterday she caught a bus to her local shops in Scotland, to "Do some shopping!" just think of that, a person whose album is going to be TOP OF THE CHARTS catching a bus into town to do some shopping, HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE HER!! she's just like all the "Ordinary" people in the world with one exception that she has an extraordinary voice & THE CHARACTER HUMILITY & GRACE to go with it!!
We love the Voice, we love the Character, we love the Story, & the Inspiration & sheer Joy that it brings us, WE LOVE SUSAN BOYLE!
I hope you will reconsider your views & perhaps publish a retraction of SOME of your misguided comments.
I recieved my three CDS this morning & I wrote the following comments as I listened to each track:
I'm writing this review as I listen to each track....
"Wild Horses" is hauntingly beautiful........
"I Dreamed a Dream" is FANTASTIC! more mellow at the start, lots of guitar, with a different arrangement THAN PREVIOUS, building into a full orchestration, when she belts it out! As the music got more dramatic the tears flowed as it brings back the memory of her very first appearance on BGT! Truly Magical!
"Cry Me A River" wonderful song, again touchingly sung, convinced that Susan could do a Blues/Jazz album!
"How Great Though Art" Susan sings this with an angelic voice, complete with choir, very moving (as is every track so far!) Her voice is so pure, always knew she could deliver!
"You'll See" Best version of this song I've heard, dramatic orchestraton, & has more meaning with Susan singing it! LOVE IT!
"Daydream Believer" Susan tells another story with this one, her voice really is stunning, & I can't help but think of Karen Carpenter..........
"Up To The Mountain" Again another moving Gospel Song, complete with choir, you can tell that these songs mean so much to Susan, & that's why she choose them, it certainly comes across!
"Amazing Grace" I'm in Floods on this one, because this was sung at my Mums Funeral. Susan sings it beautifully, then the choir joins her, at the end she goes solo again, finishing with just her angelic voice.......... Beautiful.
"Who I was Born To Be" An original song for Susan, this is the one I had been waiting anxiously to hear, it's very poignant, "& so, here I am Open arms & ready to stand, I've got the world in my hands, & it feels like my turn to fly"...
Yes Susan, it is your turn to fly & we're all flying with you!!!! (In fact I feel as though I am in ORBIT!!)
"Proud" The lyrics contains "Someday I'll make you proud" this could have been to her Mum, I'm sure that her Mum is watching down on her & is real proud, in fact MORE than proud! Susan sings this in an almost "Heart Wrenching" way, that's difficult to describe....... her voice seems to crack at one point that makes it even more emotive.
"The End Of The World" This is a lovely song, with a very simple arrangement, didn't impact on me the same as some of the others. Susan sings it beautifully though as she does EVERYTHING she sings!
"Silent Night" A very traditional Christmas carol, beautifully sung, & great arrangement, very angelic sounding (Just like Susan!) the song building with the choir.
There is a dedication from Susan on the sleeve where she thanks everyone, including "The public for their support & encouragement in times when I felt I couldn't cope"
There is also a picture of Susan with her Mum, with a handwritten caption under it that reads "I would like to dedicate this album to my beloved Mother, to whom I made a promise to "to be someone"...........
It really is a fabulous album, I bought three to support Susan. I'm looking forward to Susan's appearance on X Factor tomorrow Sunday 22nd November, where I am sure she will win over millions more fans.
Well done Susan!
Mike Danata
