  • Nov 13-19: Susa-News Summary

We, as her adoring fans, are privileged to constantly watch and enjoy the public activities of Global Superstar, Susan Boyle. I am maintaining a daily log of the highlights of Susa-news and not editorializing toooo much. Accuracy is very important – PLEASE forgive any mistakes and send me a private message (PM) with any additions and/or corrections. I’ve tried to credit the right Fan where possible.

November 13-19: Susan sang “I Dreamed A Dream” at BBC’s Children In Need Concert in Glasgow: in London, re-signed with Syco

November 13, Sunday: Susan to sing at Children In Need concert in Glasgow

    1. Posted on Susan’s Facebook page: “Susan is thrilled to announce that she will be performing at the Children In Need concert for BBC Radio Scotland on Tuesday 15th November 2016 at the City Halls in Glasgow. Tickets are available to watch the show.”

    2. Glasgowpage.com posted “Susan Boyle to perform at Children in Need concert in Glasgow” by Stacey Mullen.
“Scottish singing sensation Susan Boyle is to perform at a concert in Glasgow in aid of Children in Need. The Britain's Got Talent star will perform at the Glasgow City Halls on Tuesday, November 15 at 6.30pm.”
The singer will be hitting the high notes for Pudsey Goes to the Musicals, an evening of songs from the shows. She’ll be joining the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, West End star Scott Davies, Evening Times columnist Michelle McManus, as well as the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Musical Theatre Group.”

    3. On her Facebook page, Nic Philips posted she was flying to London this afternoon.

    4. “When I Fall In Love” from AWW was aired on The Michael Ball Show on BBC Radio 2.

    5. Sherry from Florida noted that on Spotify there was an increase of almost 60,000 Susa-listeners in less than one month – 124,309 in mid October to 183,399 listeners on Nov.12.

    6. With a November 12 date, The Associated Press posted “Music review: Susan Boyle has formula down on new album” by Mark Kennedy. Highlights:
“How to properly harness the skill of Susan Boyle is something of a pop riddle. What’s the best way to deploy the soaring voice that comes out of this shy, British, middle-aged woman? Jazz? Broadway show tunes? Christmas songs? Producer Steve Anderson thinks he’s cracked it: Give Boyle an old pop tune, surround her with an orchestra, and let her start quietly before the musicians crank up and she ends up belting behind a gale of music.
“Some choices are excellent, like the elegant, understated “What a Wonderful World” and “Always On My Mind.” But Robbie Williams’ “Angels” is already a piano-driven ballad and Boyle’s cover of it lacks the emotion of the original.
“In a risky move, Boyle sings “When I Fall In Love” with the dead icon Nat King Cole. Aside from the creep factor, it’s fine. The very-much-alive Michael Bolton joins Boyle for “Somewhere Out There,” that actually shows off Bolton more than Boyle.
“So what about the Madonna cut? What does this onetime church volunteer from a small Scottish town do with “Like a Prayer”? She turns it into a luscious church hymn — and it’s the best song from a reliable, safe album.”

    7. Allmusic.com posted a review of A Wonderful World by James Christopher Monger. Highlights:
“The seventh studio long-player from the Britain's Got Talent breakout star, Wonderful World finds Susan Boyle delivering another heartfelt and era-spanning set of pop covers, …Book-ended by a pair of life-affirming standards in the Bob Thiele-and-George David Weiss-penned title track and the Disney teardrop barometer "When You Wish Upon a Star" – both are effective metaphors for Boyle's rags to riches story – Wonderful World mostly sticks to the formula. Boyle brings warmth and stoic, flushed-faced patriotism to Sir Paul McCartney's pipe-and-drums-adorned "Mull of Kintyre," her Scottish brogue, so often tempered by the fussy refinements of vocal pop, breaks free from its shackles a bit here... a fun, slow-burn, gospel-goth take on Madonna's "Like a Prayer" helps to break up the formula a bit, providing some nice contrast to the ten-track set's more pedestrian moments.”

“Tonight will also be the first time the show has aired since the sad death of Sir Terry Wogan back in January this year so I'm bracing myself for a record amount of tears during tonight’s live broadcast. On Tuesday evening in the City Halls in Glasgow, Pudsey, our adorable cuddly friend, went to the Musicals with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
“Our host for the evening was the wonderful Jamie MacDougall who also performed alongside myself, West End Star Scott Davies, the gorgeous pupils of Inverkip Primary School and the global megastar herself Susan Boyle who was accompanied by the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland's musical theatre performers. Susan Boyle gave a spine tingling rendition of her signature tune I Dreamed a Dream. …”

    2. During her recent trip to Scotland, Sugar puddin lunched with Susan and friends. She shared a tidbit of historical interest from their conversations: “Susan did volunteer what happened in Jacksonville, Florida [the last Concert in her US Tour, where Susan did not appear back on stage for the Finale]. When she went offstage to change her gown. It split all the way up the side. She was a tad upset.”

November 19, Saturday: Re-signed with Syco

    1. Dailystar.co.uk posted “Susan Boyle 'overjoyed' as Simon Cowell label Syco offer her new contract” by James Ingham. Some highlights:
“Susan Boyle has signed a new multi-album deal with Simon Cowell – despite fears her new record will flop. The singer was terrified she would be axed after her latest release A Wonderful World bombed in the US.
“We can exclusively reveal that Susan, 55, travelled down from Scotland to London on Friday to put pen to paper.
“Our source said: ‘For Simon to offer her a new record deal before waiting to see how her new album does is a huge statement of faith. To say Susan is now overjoyed is an understatement. Susan isn’t seen as the money making machine she used to be. Simon is very loyal to Susan and knows she has been one of his most successful artists. Current chart-toppers like James Arthur and Little Mix are seen as a bigger priority on the label right now. But he wanted to re-assure Susan she is still very much a part of the Syco family.’”

    2. While in London, Susan was interviewed by “Silly Old Daniel” who posted a running tweet: “Me and Susan.” https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CxjmzbKXAAAodSp.jpg
“OK do you remember earlier when I said I was doing sth so exciting I didn't even want to tweet about it? I just did it. It was an interview with one of my faves, everyone. One of my proper, proper faves. And honestly I'm not trying to create suspense it's just that once I've said it I've said it and it's over you know what I mean? @*** She was honestly a delight.”
    • As noted by Trennie: “OMG. How unbelievable for “Silly Old Daniel” to get that interview. A mega Susan fan for years on Twitter.”

    3. There is a Daniel Welsh who is an Entertainment Reporter at The Huffington Post UK. He loves reality TV, Madonna and getting compliments about his hair. Only time will tell whether he is “Silly Old Daniel”.

    4. News.com.au/entertainment posted “SuBo reveals she worried about covering Madonna’s Like A Prayer because of its video scandal” by Kathy McCabe. Some of the highlights:
“The huge Madonna fan has tackled the superstar’s iconic 1980s hit on her latest album, A Wonderful World, reinventing the gospel-flavoured pop song as a “conversation with God”. Boyle sounds like a young choir girl on the delicate arrangement of Like a Prayer, which she describes as one of the most challenging songs she has recorded over seven albums in as many years.
“And while she is well aware of Madonna’s subversive video, which featured scenes of the pioneering pop star kissing a black saint and burning crosses, as a woman of faith Boyle chose to “overlook” it when deciding to record the unlikely cover. Susan was quoted: “You find yourself in situations where you wish you had a telephone to God, especially at times when I haven’t been well,” she says from her home in Blackburn, Scotland. I know the song did get a lot of controversy back in the day but you don’t look at the video, you look at the song and how it was performed by Madonna and it was out of this world. It did worry me a bit because of my beliefs but I believe her intention was to bring the song to everyone’s attention and I have long been a fan of Madonna so I hope I have done it justice.”
“She says she feels ‘healthy’ as she embarks on her promotional duties for the record and has no fear of travelling after the airport incident. Susan was quoted: “Airports are a part of touring and I love doing tours. Your sanctuary is your home when you come back from the travelling, I have that, I’ve got sanctuary. Blackburn people know me because I grew up with them and it’s a close-knit community. I feel like it’s family.”
“Boyle’s other sanctuary is the recording studio. She has spent months in studios recording her albums over the past seven years and she sees the windowless, isolated vocal booth as the place where she can create magic and make songs her own. She reveals she is usually given a list of tracks to record by her label team, which includes Cowell.
“Before the sessions start, she will spend a few weeks rehearsing them at home with a vocal coach, finding a way to take pieces which have been covered often dozens of times by other chart-toppers to make them a Susan Boyle moment. Susan was quoted: “The studio is my sanctuary too. When you are in there, it is just yourself and the music, it’s a magic bubble, if you like. You can be a performer, make poetry come alive and the world can’t come in, it can’t interfere. I have learned how to express myself within a safe environment through music.”
“While the paps aren’t chasing her down the street any more, it will be forever impossible for the reclusive entertainer to reclaim any anonymity. Boyle says all she wants to do is ‘entertain people and make them happy’. Susan was quoted: “Celebrity is totally separate from my lifestyle. I did enjoy it for a while, it was exciting, a real buzz and it was wonderful to wear nice clothes. But now the whole idea is to entertain people so that makes them forget their worries.”

    5. Sherry from Florida noted that on Spotify, Susan’s number of monthly listeners has nearly doubled in about 5 weeks to 247,493.
