  • Open Letter to SBFII Board of Directors, June 26, 2016

    June 26, 2016

To: SBFII Board of Directors and Administrators via Private Message: Counic, Entropydecides, Fanfromgeorgia, Internigt, Kathleen 0787, Lauraj210, MGinLA, JudyOkla, Truusbuist

Wellllll....... Today is June 26 and it’s now been 9 MONTHS since the Grinning Gator has been an unwanted resident of our SBFII site.

I repeat my letter of May 26 with some additions and revisions.

That’s an awfully long time for a problem to remain unresolved – leaving all of us to slog along dealing with the reduced functionality of the site as best as we can. The “New Posts” function does NOT work, so new posts are only listed in Listed Posts section and not accumulated and shown by threads where the new post appears. The “Search” function does NOT work, so there is no way to go back into the massive bank of Susa-information that has accumulated.

There has been no obvious change in the functioning of the SBFII Forum; from JudyOkla’s report on May 25, her ONLY progress report:

“Our current vB tech, Mark, has apologized for it taking so long on his part, and vowed to get this upgrade done asap now.
“Of course then there was an FTP access problem that we had to figure out. After calling HG again I was sent the correct server IP, port, password and host. Fingers crossed, but I do think Mark will be able to finish the job now. If for some reason this upgrade does not fix the search table issue, I will contact vB pronto to pay a tech to find the problem.”

There have not been other reports from JudyOkla and no obvious progress. The Grinning Gator seems to Enjoy the Silence of those in the SBFII administration and acts as thou SBFII is the Gator’s permanent home.

Are there some decisions to be made about how best to continue the site for all of us Susa-fans???? Will it work better if the accumulated mass of Susa-information is reduced?? Will it work better if the structure of the site were simplified??? Are there some questions that should be put to the active members for their thoughts and comments???? Again I ask, why the silence about the problem??? ALL the active members of SBFII are affected in one way or another. We all should be privy to an honest discussion of the parameters of the problem and what is being done to solve it.

At the present time, the reduced functionality of the site has been allowed to continue for THREE-QUARTERS of a year. Does NO ONE CARE!!???????

    A very concerned Susa-fan, LucyB

Well said, once again, Lucy. Come on, people, what's the holdup?

I guess that Mark, the VB tech, either forgot all about it or he couldn't care less. They're getting paid regardless.

Quite frankly, this seems like an ongoing, unacceptable situation with Host Gator.
There are other vBulletin hosting companies out there. Have we pursued other hosting companies? Here are just a few:

But even though we see the Gator, I don't think it's their problem, they're just the server. The problem is with the vBulletin software.

Out of desperation, and I may be grasping at straws-- here is a list of other forum software. Some are free and wouldn't serve our purpose, but there are several with good reviews. vBulletin is listed and most reviews are not positive. I realize that I am not an expert, but the problems that are lingering here need to be corrected in some manner I think.

I think part of the problem is that it isn't considered worth fixing at this time--until Susan does something big & newsworthy (if she ever does again) Surely there will be records, occasionally, if nothing else. The aggravation of the gator doesn't bother much of anyone but Lucy, who needs it to find info for her books. It is a shame the site doesn't work so that she can go ahead with these, as I think they are interesting, and will probably serve as a source of info about Susan, long into the future. However, I am usually on 2 or 3 times a day, and can't remember the last time I saw over 15 MEMBERS on at one time, (usually way less) plus a few visitors. It sounded, last time this was discussed that there was Plenty of available cash, and if the site goes completely out, from lack of interest while nothing is going on, that this large sum will either be divided among those who run the site, or given to charity. ??? So, there seems to be money to take care of this in some way. Apparently the site is run by members who happen to be fairly computer savvy but apparently have no idea how to take care of this, which is understandable--I sure don't know how, but my computer knowledge is extremely limited. I think the answer is, IF we have ANYONE with authority to go ahead and DO SOMETHING, they should do it. Just my humble opinion.

The Search facility is particularly necessary for LucyB, but many other members (particularly mods) used also to use it. It is extremely frustrating having to spend hours searching for old threads which used to come up automatically with one click.

I guess, Lucy, that you didn't see this, from June 13:

                    http://forum.susan-boyle.com/threads...=1#post1071144

But I get it -- and I repeat, I'm equally frustrated, as I used to use the search function frequently. As I understand it, at first the problem was with Hostgator. Once Judy rectified those problems, now we're just waiting for the update from vBulletin -- no idea why it's taking so long. It has nothing to do with the mass of data, or the 'structure of the site'.

Hopefully, it will be resolved soon...as Judy says, 'before July'.

Waiting until she does something newsworthy would be too late. At least we can still post, but just pray that things don't get any worse than they are now because I don't see anything ever being remedied again.

From JudyOkla, via Lauraj210, post #10 on this thread:
"I would think...and sure hope...that function will be working before July. I'm going to be very upset if not!!"

According to my calander, there are only 4 more days left in June and then its July. So then what???? The problem has NOT been resolved for 9 months; is there any use hoping that it will be resolved within the next 4 days????

This site should be babied and cared for like a cherished momento, it is historic and contains a goldmine of factual and treasured facts from the beginning of Susan's legendary rise to fame and her loyal following of fans throughout the progression of her storied career. While I and so many have followed Susan from day one individually then as a member of this site, I stay in tune with the problems and navigate here the best I can, I am concerned about new interests in this site who would find it very troubling to navigate and lose interest and that is sad, there is such a treasure trove of information here and it cannot even be viewed. I just wish everything could get repaired, whatever the trouble, and the site and all it's glory we could again enjoy with a click and no gator, even if we as members need to chip in to help. Thanks to all for your efforts in helping to restore this great site. Susan's career is not ending, always continuing at her pace. IMO

I might point out that SherryjKelley is still listed as our newest member, (and a very valued and enthusiastic member she is) but she has been on quite a while now, so we are probably having interested visitors who are losing interest because they can't get to a lot of the sites they would find interesting. Just a thought, to add fuel to the fire on needing the site fixed.
