  • Open Letter to SBFII Board of Directors, May 22, 2016

    May 22, 2016

To: SBFII Board of Directors and Administrators via Private Message: Counic, Entropydecides, Fanfromgeorgia, Internigt, Kathleen 0787, Lauraj210, MGinLA, JudyOkla, Truusbuist

Wellllll....... As of Thursday, May 26, it will be 8 MONTHS ----that’s ¾ of a year!!! since the Grinning Gator has been an unwanted resident of our SBFII site. I repeat my letter of April 9 with some additions.

That’s an awfully long time for a problem to remain unresolved – leaving all of us to slog along dealing with the reduced functionality of the site as best as we can. The “New Posts” function does NOT work, so new posts are only listed in Listed Posts section and not accumulated and shown by threads where the new post appears. The “Search” function does NOT work, so there is no way to go back into the massive bank of Susa-information that has accumulated.

There has been no obvious change in the functioning of the SBFII Forum; there have been NO PROGRESS reports from JudyOkla; in fact the Grinning Gator seems to Enjoy the Silence of those in the SBFII administration and acts as thou its the Gator’s permanent home.

Are there some decisions to be made about how best to continue the site for all of us Susa-fans???? Will it work better if the accumulated mass of Susa-information is reduced?? Will it work better if the structure of the site were simplified??? Are there some questions that should be put to the active members for their thoughts and comments???? Again I ask, why the silence about the problem??? ALL the active members of SBFII are affected in one way or another. We all should be privy to an honest discussion of the parameters of the problem and what is being done to solve it.

At the present time, the reduced functionality of the site has been allowed to continue for almost THREE-QUARTERS of a year. At your Board Meeting on May 22, please take whatever steps necessary to finally FIX THE PROBLEM and boot the Grinning Gator off our site!!

    A very concerned Susa-fan, LucyB

Well said, Lucy. This really has become a ridiculous situation. What on earth is the point of all this accumulated information if no one can access it. Dealing with the "Gator" and restoring full functionality to Susan's fan site is really the only important question facing a board meeting. If, because of family responsibilities, Judy O can't find time to deal with this, obviously the Board will have to find another option.

      What LucyB said!

The lack of the NEW POSTS function and the SEARCH function especially would be a problem for many people here, but would be even more so for LucyB who needs to be able to access information for her weekly summaries and records of Susan's career. Which is a big part of what this forum is for.

They found another option. Pay someone to fix it. Either that hasn't been done or the problem just can't be fixed. I think it's time to accept the fact that it's never going to be fixed.
Since it's very difficult to go back and find old info, they might as well delete it. It's just taking up space.

This doesn't help LucyB very much, if she is to continue her book series.
It is probably difficult to find someone with the know-how to work on a site that is this large, or has this large a storage. And it is probably also difficult to find someone who is retired, with the time and knowledge of computers and websites, and willing to put in quite a bit of time for zero payment, to take care of the running of the site. But surely someone can be found, somewhere, and my suggestion would be as suggested above--HIRE someone to fix it. Even if you have to lay off some of the donations to Susan's charities a bit, for a while. The site seems to have a pretty good backup money supply, and I would think something Susan would also like is for her fansite keep up and running. I know there are others, but this one seems to be the one that stays on top of things, and also doesn't post disparaging info, like some of the sites do. Just my suggestion, but for goodness sakes, hire someone and get it done.

It IS very difficult but not impossible to find old info. IMO it would be a big mistake to delete it - we have very important info in some of those hard-to-find threads which would be of historical or biographical interest.

Eventually there won't be enough people here to keep the forum running, especially since it's an NPO that needs a Board and by-laws and financial statements. And when no one is paying the server fees anymore, won't everything just disappear anyway?

Why would you think that, Marty? The forum has survived for seven years without a problem. There is much less activity of late because there is so little Susa-news and I guess people are getting on with the rest of their lives. But as soon as Susan is performing or touring or recording or releasing an album, this place will get very busy and it will be all hands on deck.

True, there are still quite a few people who read here and even post, and it'll pick up somewhat if Susan gets busy, but that doesn't change the fact that since this is an NPO it needs a BIG STAFF, it's not like other forums where one person opens it and runs it like it was originally. This forum is a whole other animal.

I have always found this board to be very transparent. But regarding this issue, it has been mostly silent. I would like to know what, if anything, the board has found out regarding if this problem can be fixed or not. If it can be fixed, then why the delay? If it can't be fixed, say so.

I think we have had as many people as we need to help run things up to now, and I would like to think that this will continue in the future. Our difficulty at the moment is the lack of a person with the time and technical skills to fix the gator problem and restore the forum to full functionality. I do not know how the Board is dealing with this but I am hoping that since they have agreed in principle to hire someone to fix the problem, that they will follow this up as soon as possible.

We are going to need to be ready and fully functional when Susan starts getting busy again. And this could happen within the next few weeks.

For all you posts on this thread. I wonder if a voluntary donation ( any amount) by members would help towards the cost to repair. Just a thought. Many donate for flowers or presents to Susan. This would be a gift to ourselves.

From the latest treasurer's report, it would seem the forum presently has enough money to fix the problem, IF it can be fixed.

"As of March 31, 2016, the end of the first three quarters of our fiscal year, we have $8033.05 in assets and no liabilities."

So why couldn't a college student majoring in this type of field be hired. These young people are very very savvy in the computerized programming world and it would be extra cash in their pocket.
