    3. In The Guardian’s Observer Magazine [dated December 8] had a picture of Susan on the cover and a 3-page spread, “Susan Boyle: 'I have Asperger's'” by Catherine Deveney. It is an in-depth and extended report based on an interview Catherine had with Susan at her council house. The shorter on-line report “Susan Boyle: my relief at discovering that I have Asperger's” by Catherine Deveney (see Dec 7#2) is a distillation of this very extensive report. “As Susan Boyle's extraordinary career continues, the singer reveals for the first time that she's been diagnosed with Asperger's. She talks to Catherine Deveney about her personal struggles, sibling jealousy and duetting with Elvis.”

    4. After the news broke that Susan was diagnosed with Asperger’s, the electronic ether was flooded with comments. In the afternoon “Susan Boyle” was #1 on Trending Now on Yahoo! and trending #3 on Google News/Entertainment; later “Susan Boyle” was trending #4 on AOL and #2 on Trending Now on Yahoo!; and near midnight, “Susan Boyle” was #4 on Trending Now Yahoo! Just some initial tweets:
    • From the National Autistic Society: “By revealing her diagnosis to @Guardian, Susan Boyle has played an important role in bringing the issue of autism to the nation's attention”
    • Leading autism campaigner, Kevin Healey: “@SusanBoyleHQ so glad you finally have your diagnoses susan your such a remarkable woman #autism”

    • “I'll be on the @TODAY show on Monday morning talking about @SusanBoyleHQ and her Asperger's diagnosis. Very brave of her! #RaisingAwareness”

    5. Two reports from the UK media:
    • Dailyrecord.co.uk posted “Scottish singer Susan Boyle reveals her 'relief' after being diagnosed with Asperger's following years of bullying by Lindsey Archibald” citing the report in The Observer. “The 52-year-old spoke of her relief today after finding out she has Asperger's following years of bullying for her learning difficulties. Subo says she is now a bit more relaxed about herself. … The Scottish singer, who shot to fame on Britain's Got Talent in 2009, told the Observer that she was diagnosed a year ago and now feels ‘relieved and a bit more relaxed about myself’.”
    • Bbc.co.uk posted “Susan Boyle reveals Asperger's Syndrome diagnosis”. “Scottish singer Susan Boyle has revealed she has been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. The star, who shot to fame after appearing on Britain's Got Talent in 2009, had spent years believing she suffered slight brain damage at birth. In an interview with The Observer newspaper she told of her relief at finally getting a ‘clearer understanding’ of her condition. But she vowed: ‘It will not make any difference to my life.’”

    6. The UK media also reported about Susan’s pledge to lose weight:
    • Mirror.co.uk posted “Susan Boyle pledges to shed two stone after film debut in The Christmas Candle” by Gemma Aldridge.
“Susan Boyle pledges to shed two stone after film debut in The Christmas Candle. Susan was quoted: “I’ve been dieting ever since I was a kid and I’ve tried everything you can imagine. I always have the same ¬resolution every year – to lose weight. I just want to lose a bit off my bum. I’m over 12 stone now and I want to try to get down to 10 stone. I did lose some a couple of years ago then I put it all back on.”
“In the past her good intentions have fallen victim to her sweet tooth. She said: ‘I always end up stuffing my face with sweeties or something. I’m not supposed to have them since I was diagnosed with diabetes. It runs in our family, and I am on medication but I still haven’t been able to resist eating the odd chocolate.’”
“But this time she will have help – from a new pet pooch she is promising herself. She said: ‘I do know that a dog isn’t just for Christmas, though – I have thought long and hard about it. I’m not sure what kind, but a small fluffy one that I can take for walks to get all the exercise I need. That will help me to lose the weight.’”
Susan was quoted about travelling: “I travel a lot for work and that means I have irregular meal times so even if I try to eat healthily I end up snacking... a LOT.”
About Minibars: “When I get to a hotel room and see the crisps and nuts there, I can’t help myself from opening them up and having a nibble. It’s a big weakness.”
About Sweeties: “I love sweets and I get given them a lot, which makes it hard to resist. In America it’s big bags of peanut M&Ms and in New York last week I was given a huge jar of jelly babies.”
About Chocolate: “I’m not fussy when it comes to chocolate, I’ll go for anything and everything. I’m having to really cut down on all that stuff because of my diabetes, but it’s so hard!”
    • Dailyrecord.co.uk posted “Revealed: Scottish singing sensation Susan Boyle vows to lose 2st after health alert”. Also included with most of the information in the Mirror.co.uk report was “Susan’s Christmas single, O Come All Ye Faithful, featuring Elvis Presley, is released today, with all profits going to Save The Children. She is an ambassador for the charity’s Christmas Jumper Day, which will be held on Friday, wants to go to Africa next year to see the organisation’s work. She said: ‘I don’t have any children of my own but I have 16 nieces and nephews and my work with Save the Children is really important. Children in poverty both here and abroad need help.’”

    7. Susanboylemusicuk posted “Susan Boyle Save The Children Press Launch Highlights” on YouTube. The 1:42- minute video shows Susan at the Save the Children press conference talking about making the official music video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3xa8NP7PbQ

    8. Interesting information posted about ticket sales for Susan’s spring Tour of England and Wales posted by Pendragon53: “Just finished the ticket sales, to say I am gobsmacked is to say the least... there are only 7,977 tickets left across the whole 19 venues... unbloodybelievable! All theatres have sold in excess of 1,000 tickets or seats if you will!”

    2. Susanboylemusic.com announced the official release of Susan’s Charity Christmas Single, her duet with “O Come All Ye Faithful”

“The official video is almost as beautiful as the track itself. Recorded with some of the children Susan met on her visit to one of Save The Children’s FAST projects in Glasgow - it’s the perfect video to get you in the mood for festivities!” with the video embedded on the site.

    3. In the evening, Susan was scheduled to sing “O Come All Ye Faithful” LIVE on The One Show on BBC1.
*A tweet from SusanBoyleHQ: “And to celebrate - Susan's performing the track LIVE on @BBCOne's The One Show at 7pm tonight. Don't miss it!”
*Later in the day information appeared: “Due to a throat infection that was picked up in New York, Susan will sadly no longer be performing on The One Show tonight. We are very sorry for any disappointment and wish her a speedy recovery.”

    4. In the US, an interview with Susan and her singing “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” aired on Fox5NY. This was taped the previous week most likely Monday, December 2, the first day she was in New York. Susan was wearing her black dress with long black lace sleeves with a cowl-like collar faced with gold braid. She and anchor Rosanna Scotto were sitting on a big round couch while they visited about Christmas, album #6, Simon Cowell, et al.
She was standing at a microphone in a small area when she sang “I’ll Be Home For Christmas”; the song seemed unusually slow and Susan not her usual confident self; part of the time her hands were clutched to her stomach.
    • The 6:36-minute interview and performance was posted on YouTube by He Reigns, “Susan Boyle - I'll Be Home For Christmas & interview - Good Day New York” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsSZvWaydQA.

Citing logistical difficulties, the news comes as Boyle confirmed to a UK newspaper that she has been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, a type of autism.”

    6. Susa-fan Blessedalotbysusan who monitors Twitter and compiles Susa-tweets, posted her comments on the forum about Susan revealing her Asperger’s diagnosis and the resulting media frenzy:
“I wanted to give you an idea of how much momentum this story is getting. When the story first broke on Twitter on Sunday, 24 hours ago or so, the tweets were coming in for the next 2 hours, quickly gaining momentum, spreading to news sites all over the World. The number of folks with Asperger’s whom call themselves “Aspies” whom have tweeted in support and elation are overwhelming — far too many to count.
“Monday morning, to get where Id left off, it took me an hour and a half, just to scroll down the page of Tweets. By the time I’d reached to where I’d left off, there were 300 incoming Tweets. Then it took another 6 hours to scroll back up and sift. By the time Id reached the Top of the Page there were 2500 incoming Tweets.
“In the meantime, this wasn’t just ‘news stories’ on websites, now it was News on TV stations all over the world: CNN, ABC, FOX, NBC, CTV , ET, ETALK, TMZ, USA Today, US Magazine, Time, YAHOO (pick a country) USA, Canada, Malaysia, Latino, UK, New Zealand. And it was the #1 Trend on Yahoo, Google, E-online, sites in the Netherlands, Venezuela. Also in New York Post, Washington Post, New York times, Detroit Free Press, Chicago Tribune , AP, Reuters, BBC , China Post, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, a huge story in Jakarta, India, Toronto Star, Philippines, Germany’s Der Spiegel, countless Latin American sites, Lebanon, all the Australian News sites, and I’m sure I’ve missed a ton more.
“Can’t tell you how many Tweets I came across where she and this story was featured ON THE NEWS, every few hours, across the US (big story there ) or how many sites the Video has been played at. Through the course of sifting through the 2500, I came across 3 different news talk shows and radio shows, where “experts” in the field, are scheduled to come and talk about it tomorrow on the different shows. There was already two experts on a call in show today somewhere in the world, talking about Susan. There’s also the Radio Shows tomorrow discussing the story. I’m sure there is probably even more incoming Tweets for “discussion panels “etc for shows tomorrow, somewhere in the world.”

    7. Hello! Magazine published “HELLO! Exclusive: Susan Boyle reveals she suffers from Asperger's” in the December 16, 2013 issue, No. 1307.
“09 DECEMBER 2013 - She was brought up to believe that she was slightly brain-damaged after being starved of oxygen at birth, but in this week's HELLO! magazine, singing sensation Susan Boyle reveals that she has just been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome – and talks movingly of the relief she feels to finally have a proper explanation for the ‘emotional outbursts’ and ‘acute anxiety’ that have plagued her throughout her life.”
Susan was quoted: “Doctors told my parents that I was starved of oxygen at birth and that this had caused me brain damage, leaving me with learning difficulties and a lower than average IQ. At school I was pushed aside as if I didn't matter, while the brighter pupils got all the attention. I was mocked and bullied. As a result, I spent my whole life in a bubble, felt inferior to others and had problems forming proper relationships. Now that I know the correct reason why, I understand myself better and can move on. It feels as if an enormous weight has been lifted. The message that I hope my revelation will give others is, if I can do it, so can you. No matter what your condition, you can do whatever you want.”

    8. BBC.co.uk posted “Susan Boyle is part of autism's ‘invisible generation’” by Steven Brocklehurst. Highlights from the extended report:
“Scottish singer Susan Boyle has been diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, a form of autism. She is one of thousands of people who have the condition but were not diagnosed earlier in life. The National Autistic Society (NAS) Scotland recently warned that there is an ‘invisible generation’ of older people with autism. Until a generation ago, the condition was often misunderstood and misdiagnosed. Susan Boyle, who is 52, is typical of many, having spent years believing she suffered slight brain damage at birth.
Robert MacBean from the National Autistic Society Scotland was quoted extensively: “A ‘good diagnosis experience’ was very important, regardless of a person's age. A good experience leaves you understanding yourself, understanding what has been happening to you and also allows you to develop your own coping strategies.
“Unfortunately not everyone gets that experience. Some people, if they manage to get a diagnosis, it is after years of waiting and quite often they are left at the end with a leaflet and as they leave they are told 'don't worry about having a label'. That's all the support they get.
“Susan Boyle has been diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, which is a form of autism in which people quite often have verbal language, can present very well in terms of communication, but that often masks many of the difficulties they will be experiencing.”

    9. CNN.com posted “Susan Boyle tells British paper she has Asperger's” by Steve Almasy. “The singer told The Observer that she went to a specialist in Scotland because she thought she had a more serious condition than the diagnosis she had received when she was a child. ‘I was told I had brain damage. I always knew it was an unfair label,’ she said. ‘Now I have a clearer understanding of what's wrong and I feel relieved and a bit more relaxed about myself.’”
“Boyle, 52, said she hoped revealing her Asperger's diagnosis will lead people to understand and treat her better. She said it was important for her to have a support team. ‘I am not strong on my own. When I have the support of people around me I am fine,’ she said.”

    10. Dailymail.co.uk posted “I have got Asperger's, says SuBo: Star tells of relief at finding out why she struggles with fame” by Emma Lowe. “After claiming she was misdiagnosed with brain damage as a child – and cruelly dubbed ‘Susan Simple’ at school – Miss Boyle said she now feels more relaxed in her own skin. She told Observer Magazine: ‘I always knew it was an unfair label. Now I have a clearer understanding of what’s wrong and I feel relieved and a bit more relaxed about myself.’”

    11. BT.com posted “Boyle reveals Asperger's diagnosis”. “Singing star Susan Boyle has revealed she has been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, after years of believing she had suffered slight brain damage at birth.
“The Britain's Got Talent contestant - who has gone on to have hits around the world - told of her relief at having a proper explanation for ‘emotional outbursts’ and ‘acute anxiety’ that have afflicted her throughout her life.”

    12. A radio show in London and one in Dubai aired short interviews via phone with Susan:
    • Classic FM, the largest national commercial radio station in the UK, had a live short chat session with Susan. Three questions and answers from the ten that were transcribed by Clarissastar:
    Q. “Hello, Susan do you practice every day, how much technical work do you do and how long do you normally practice in total?” Susan: “I do practice everyday. Various warm up exercises help. Depending on the schedule and what show's I'm performing on I can practice for an hour a day to up to 3.”
Q: “Who would you like to duet with in the future?” Susan: “Rod Stewart or Elton John would be great. I'd also love to do a duet with Andrea Bocelli.”
Q: “You've had an amazing journey in music over the past few years - would you do it all over again?” Susan: I've loved every minute and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. I don't want it to end.”
    • Kris Fade on Virgin Radio in Dubai had a 3:44-minute phone interview with Susan with the usual questions and comments about her BGT audition, her plans for Christmas, and, she still takes the bus when she’s home in Blackburn.

    13. Khaleejtimes.com posted “Chat with Susan Boyle about life, fame & chasing dreams”. “Ahead of her cancelled Abu Dhabi show, we chat with Susan Boyle about life after fame and chasing dreams.” From the question and answer format, 4 of the 10:
    • Q: “Your voice has been described as ‘healing’ but also ‘heartbreaking’. What do you think it is about your sound that touches so many people?” Susan: “I’ve never really thought of my voice that way, to me I just sing. I think it may though have something to do with the song choices. I like to sing songs that I can emotionally connect to and really feel and understand the lyrics. If a song connects then I think you can do a far better performance and I guess that transcends into my voice.”
    • Q: “You recorded a posthumous duet with Elvis, an honour that has only been bestowed upon a few artists. What did it feel like hearing your voices together on the Christmas track?” Susan: “It was awesome. Technology really is a wonderful thing. I’m incredibly lucky to have the honour of performing a duet with Elvis - I’m the first British artist that has been afforded this duet for an album and it’s a wonderful feeling. Hearing the song for the first time was just magical. I felt as though Elvis was with me in a weird way when I was in the studio. From recording to the finished product, it was a wonderful experience. However the best thing to come from this duet is that we are releasing it in conjunction with Save the Children as a Christmas charity single and all proceeds will go to help children around the world.”
    • Q: “Besides buying a new ‘Posh House’ as you call it, you’ve made very few extravagant purchases. What is it that you value most?” Susan: “I value my friends, family and fans. I value singing for people and making them happy. It has never been about fame and fortune for me, it’s always been about the singing. That’s it. I can make a difference with my voice. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice to know that I can pay my bills but money is not the important part of this for me.”
    • Q: “Since gaining worldwide fame, how do you choose who to surround yourself with?” Susan: “Exactly the same friends and family as before I went on to Britain’s Got Talent, and now I have my small team around me from management and label. But I have one of my oldest friends travel with me, so it’s basically home from home.”
