  • Oct 27 - Nov 2 Part III Susa-News Summary

October 27–November 2: Performed 4 songs at Hospice Variety Show at Glasgow’s SECC; London Press Conference, Susan an Ambassador for Save the Children, duet with Elvis Presley, “O Come All Ye Faithful”, to be Charity Single for Save the Children

Part III: Oct. 30– Nov. 2

October 30, Wednesday: Day #2 for Home For Christmas in the US

    1. Ladbrokes.com posted “SuBo one half of unlikely duo aiming for Christmas number one” by William Geldart. Some of the highlights:
“Scottish singer Susan Boyle is set to release a charity single ‘duet’ with the late Elvis Presley, and the news has prompted Ladbrokes to offer odds of 5/1 for the release to reach the coveted Christmas number one slot. Boyle’s take on Elvis’ 1971 Christmas hit ‘O Come, All Ye Faithful’ will be a popular festive choice, especially as the proceeds will be going to the Save the Children charity for which ‘SuBo’ is an ambassador.
“Digital technology has been utilised to create a black and white video of the Hound Dog singer with Boyle and children involved with the charity’s Fast programme at a Glasgow primary school. The Britain’s Got Talent sensation has already enjoyed a meteoric, if unexpected, rise to fame and claiming a Christmas number one would be another remarkable chapter in her career.”

    2. Some tweets:
    • A tweet from Steve Anderson: “The gorgeous title track of Susan Boyle's Xmas album I produced with @cliffmasterson - I'll Be Home For Christmas”
    • In Harmoney: “We will definitely have this one on repeat in this next couple months! Get Home for Christmas from @SusanBoyleHQ”
    • Columbia Records: “Get in the holiday spirit! Get your copy of Susan Boyle's (@SusanBoyleHQ) new album "Home For Christmas" now http://smarturl.it/HomeForXmas”

    3. A review posted on iTunes: “Another Eydie Gorme - I was actually shocked how good Ms. Boyle has become. She finally has achieved the exquisite beauty first demonstrated in her first professional recording of Cry Me A River in the 1990’s. I had thought she lost this beauty because of age. This is the first album of hers that truly captures the sadness of Scotland. Her rendition of Father Christmas was simply beautiful. This album is a lesson in pedagogy: With endless practice and error, one can achieve majesty, such as Ms. Boyle. The musical arrangements in this album are brilliant, powerful, yet never overpowering. A 10”

    4. News.sky.com posted “Susan Boyle Duets With Elvis For Christmas” by Joe Michalczuk. “The Britain's Got Talent Star is teaming up with the King to help raise funds for a children's charity in the run-up to Christmas. A 1:20-minute video, “Subo Announces Duet with Elvis” was embedded.

    5. A tweet from Save the Children with a link to a wonderful Susa-picture: “Susan Boyle (@SusanBoyleHQ) is de nieuwe internationale ambassadeur van Save the Children! http://t.co/GNQOiVbdZv”

    6. Some in the Middle East media were announcing Susan’s appearance in Abu Dhabi:

“The Abu Dhabi stop is part of the Scottish singer’s debut international world tour, which includes a range of North American cities. Boyle has already ventured on the road this year, playing a selection of UK dates.
“A recent concert at Eden Court Theatre in Inverness in the UK was packed with more than two dozen covers, including Somewhere Over the Rainbow, River Deep Mountain High, You’ll Never Walk Alone and her signature take on the classic I Dreamed a Dream from Les Misérables.
“A highlight of her concert will be a duet with the late legend Elvis Presley on the Christmas classic Oh Come, All ye Faithful. The concert will also feature local support acts, said organisers.”
    • Happeningindubai.blogspot.com posted “DOUBLE GRAMMY® AWARD NOMINEE SUSAN BOYLE TO PERFORM IN ABU DHABI - Scottish Superstar’s First Ever International Concert.
“Abu Dhabi Cricket Club under the Chairmanship of HE Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture, Youth and Community and AUH Live, are proud to announce a partnership that will see the state of the art Zayed Cricket Stadium transformed into Abu Dhabi’s premier concert venue; with Grammy-nominated British singing sensation Susan Boyle as the first headline act. The international chart-topping artist from Scotland will perform under the stars in what promises to be an unforgettable evening of world-class entertainment for an all-ages audience on Friday, 13th December.
“Susan made worldwide headlines recently when it was announced she is the first British artist EVER to have a posthumous duet with the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll featured on their album. Her fifth studio album ‘Home For Christmas’ features the duet with Elvis.
    • Timeoutdubai.com posted “Susan Boyle to play the UAE”. “If you thought the year’s big gig announcements were all out of the way, then think again – it’s been revealed Susan Boyle is to play Abu Dhabi in December. … The performance comes just in time for the festive period, which Boyle is fittingly marking with her fifth album Home for Christmas.”

    October 31, Thursday
    1. STV.tv posted “Susan Boyle 'is a really special lady' says Paul O’Grady” by Laura Boyd. “Paul spoke of his fondness for the Britain’s Got Talent singer, as the pair announced that the proceeds of Susan’s duet with Elvis Presley on O Come, All Ye Faithful, will go directly to Save the Children.
“Paul told STV’s Showbuzz reporter Laura Boyd: “She’s a sweetheart. She’s a really special lady Susan; I’m very fond of her. I love her and you know what, I feel really protective of her. I’m like a pit-bull, I really am. If somebody’s annoying her, I step in. I’m like her bouncer!”
“It seems the feeling is mutual as Susan laughed and joked with Paul, agreeing it would be great to join him on a trip to Africa to see the work the charity does.
“Justin Forsyth, CEO of Save the Children, also spoke of his joy at having Susan on board, saying: “She’s inspirational. I was so excited when I had the chance to meet her and I know she has an amazing touch to inspire children and adults alike to do more.”

    2. A portion of Paul’s review of “Little Drummer Boy” posted at Myfestivepop.blogspot.co.uk. Obviously, Paul is a fan of The Overtones: “… I have to say that it's a genuinely stunning interpretation of the song from start to finish, leaving me more than a little awestruck. It is very reverent and haunting all the way through, beginning with a solitary booming drum beat that is enriched by The Overtones harmonising alongside it (notably, it becomes beautifully textured as they change the pitch of harmonies to meet the melody of the song like some celestial choir guiding the carol forward from on high). This serves to give the song a respectfully solemn effect, a hushed awe & piety that shines through like the bright Christmas star. Susan gives nothing less than a stellar vocal performance, guiding the song forward with unfiltered clarity that is both beautiful & refreshing (in an era of vocodor, autotune & electronic manipulation); a military drum beat is added like some magical propeller steering this musical ship forward, with Susan & the boys the anchor keeping this glorious symphonic story on track. And then something very amazing happens... as the song goes into the instrumental break, there's a definitive shift that elevates the tune to heavenly euphoria. I mean, it was already on cloud 9 but this is beyond even that! Grandiose bagpipes are added along with a key change that acts as the most joyous, enraptured heralding of glad tidings I've heard in a long time - and all the while, The Overtones are giving harmonised elegance - never once getting lost in the mix. Kudos to producers Steve Anderson & Cliff Masterson on a sterling job.”

    3. A few Abu Dhabi tweets:
From AllDetailsME: “We are very excited to announce that AUH Live is bringing DOUBLE GRAMMY AWARD NOMINEE Susan Boyle to #AbuDhabi”
From Time Out Abu Dhabi: “‏It's Boyling hot in #AbuDhabi! Susan Boyle is coming to town December 13... who is excited!? remember this?”

November 1, Friday: Home For Christmas released in Australia and New Zealand
    1. Eveningtimes.co.uk posted “Cat's Eyes on Glasgow: finding love for Subo, rolling up for a Drive-In and meeting Bread Meats Bread” by Cat Cubie. It’s a catch-all column about Glasgow events over the past week. From her comments about Susan and “The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice Variety Show”:
“Subo: ‘the modern day fairytale’. I’ll confess, having never seen her perform live before, I was a wee bit of a cynic. It wasn’t that I didn’t know she could sing, I just wasn’t sure she was that good. I stand(ing ovation) corrected. She was incredible. She filled the audience and the Armadillo at the Prince and Princess of Wales 30th Anniversary Variety Show with - as Darius would say - a whole lot of love.”

    2. A very special Susa-tweet addressed to Simon Cowell: “@SimonCowell you should be so proud of Susan Boyle, an incredible human being and one that I'm glad you gave us the opportunity to hear, Ta”

    3. Tweets about The Christmas Candle:
    • “The Christmas Candle! Samantha Barks!!! I need this film to come to the UK!”
    • “"The Christmas Candle" looks like it might have the makings of a family-friendly classic”

    • “November ... This means one thing guys ... THE CHRISTMAS CANDLE!! We can officially freak out & countdown!! @SamanthaBarks”

    4. Arrangements are being made by Susa-fans for a Meet & Greet in Houston, Texas when Susan is in town. Randma posted: “Our current total is 37 confirmed and 2 maybes. There is still time for those of you who want to come... the restaurant doesn't need the exact head count until Nov 14th, I believe... and Grits was able to reserve the largest room we could find (holds 80).” Not only are fans busy making their travel plans, and special gifts are in the works for Susan.

    1. A review of Home For Christmas posted at Luhathoughts.blogspot.fr:
“I will never apologize for liking most of Susan Boyle's *recordings*. She has a voice that is perfect for records. It's an accessible soprano, and she (or her producers) has a knack for choosing the best vocal arrangements that highlight her voice. Plus, she makes record that have an element of "old fashioned" flair while still appealing to modern tastes.
Some comments about the specific tracks: “I especially love her slight lilt in her "I'll Be Home For Christmas … And I love that she covers "I Believe in Father Christmas," a "controversial" Christmas song that is kind of bitter and angry … She duets with Johnny Mathis (the ultimate Holiday song singer, in my opinion) in "When A Child Is Born" and it's a perfect match. A slight misfire is her 'duet' with Elvis Presley in "O Come All Ye Faithful," because the track sounds just like two people singing together with no connection between them.”
The author concluded: “I think I mentioned recently that I have experienced a little bit of saturation with regards to Holiday music, but I listened to this straightaway and felt light and joyful afterwards. I think that's close to what truly is the real meaning of Christmas, ain't it?”

    2. The Christmas Candle was screened, although the location was not noted: “At a screening of @maxlucado's new film The Christmas Candle… http://instagram.com/p/gLxkN7oGrT/”
